Description
Hypogymnia physodes, commonly known as the monk's-hood lichen, is a type of foliose lichen that frequently colonizes the bark of trees. While not a parasite that feeds directly on plant sap, it is often associated with tree decline. In agronomic practice, its presence serves as a visual indicator of low growth vigor, aging bark, or poor environmental conditions within an orchard.
This species primarily targets fruit trees, such as apples and pears, as well as various ornamental trees. It thrives in humid, shaded environments where air circulation is restricted. While it does not kill the tree directly, excessive coverage by the lichen can harbor pests and fungal spores, while physically impeding the respiration of the bark tissues.
Symptoms of infestation include the formation of gray or grayish-green leafy lobes with dark, upturned edges on the trunk and primary branches. The lichen adheres tightly to the surface of the bark, creating a distinct, patchy appearance. Over time, the colony can grow thick enough to block the natural lenticels of the bark, causing stress to the plant.
The development of Hypogymnia physodes is driven by high humidity levels and the presence of rough, older bark. It is most frequently found on trees that lack proper maintenance or are situated in areas with poor ventilation. A healthy, actively growing tree with smooth, rapidly expanding bark provides a poor substrate for the lichen to establish itself.
To control and prevent the spread, arborists recommend regular mechanical cleaning of the bark using soft scrapers during damp weather. Applying lime washes or approved copper-based disinfectants helps in eradicating remaining spores. Long-term prevention focuses on improving tree vigor through balanced fertilization, proper irrigation, and crown pruning to increase light exposure and air circulation, which prevents the moisture buildup necessary for the lichen to thrive.
