Hypomyces lateritius is a specialized species of ascomycete fungus that functions as an obligate mycoparasite. It primarily targets fleshy mushrooms, most notably the chanterelles (Cantharellus species), effectively colonizing and eventually consuming the host's reproductive structures.

The pathogen thrives by developing a mycelium that permeates the host's tissue. This process involves the degradation of the mushroom's cellular structure, which halts the host's natural development and replaces its fertile surfaces with the parasite's own spore-producing structures.

Symptoms of infection are easily recognizable during the field. The affected mushrooms initially show a white, mold-like coating that eventually turns into a distinctive brick-red or orange crust. The morphology of the host changes significantly, often appearing bloated or malformed, and the distinct gills of the chanterelle may become completely obscured.

Environmental conditions play a key role in the dispersal and development of this pathogen. The fungus requires high humidity and moderate temperatures to thrive, often appearing in massive outbreaks during wet forest seasons when conditions are optimal for the germination of its spores and subsequent colonization of host tissues.

The impact of this disease is primarily aesthetic and qualitative, rendering the affected mushrooms unsuitable for culinary use. There are no agricultural control measures implemented, as it is a natural biological occurrence; however, foragers are advised to avoid harvesting infected mushrooms to prevent further localized spread of the parasite's spores.
