Description
Interveinal chlorosis is a common physiological disorder in plants characterized by the yellowing of leaf tissue between the veins, while the veins themselves remain green. Unlike parasitic diseases, this condition is essentially a nutritional or environmental signal indicating that the plant is struggling to synthesize chlorophyll due to a lack of essential nutrients or impaired metabolic processes.
The primary driver of interveinal chlorosis is the deficiency of mobile or immobile micronutrients, specifically magnesium, iron, manganese, or zinc. External factors, such as extreme soil pH (too high or too low), waterlogging, and poor root health, often exacerbate these deficiencies by preventing the uptake of vital nutrients from the growing medium.
The ornamental plant Poinsettia is particularly susceptible to these imbalances. In this crop, interveinal chlorosis frequently manifests as a diagnostic symptom of magnesium deficiency, appearing initially on older leaves. If left untreated, it impacts the overall health of the bracts and weakens the plant's resistance to environmental stress.
Symptoms begin with a subtle loss of green pigment in the interveinal areas, which gradually turns into distinct yellow or pale green patches. As the condition worsens, the margins of the leaves may become necrotic, leaf drop increases, and the plant experiences a significant reduction in overall photosynthetic capacity and vigor.
To effectively manage and prevent interveinal chlorosis, the following strategies should be implemented:
- Regular soil and water testing to monitor pH levels and nutrient availability.
- Application of chelated micronutrient fertilizers, which are more readily absorbed by the roots and foliage.
- Adjusting irrigation practices to ensure proper oxygen levels at the root zone.
- Using specific amendments like magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) when magnesium deficiency is confirmed.
