Irenopsis pteridicola is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Meliolales. It is known to infect various species of ferns, manifesting as dark, superficial colonies on the foliage. While often considered a minor pathogen in the wild, it can become a significant nuisance in greenhouse environments and nurseries.

The host range is primarily restricted to ferns, particularly those species kept in environments with high humidity and limited airflow. The fungus colonizes the surface of the fronds, where it establishes specialized structures called haustoria to derive essential nutrients directly from the host plant's cells.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as dark, soot-like patches or circular spots on the upper side of the fern fronds. Unlike many other fungal infections, these spots remain relatively localized at first, but under favorable conditions, the infection can spread rapidly, leading to chlorosis and potential tissue necrosis if the fungal coverage becomes extensive.

The development and spread of Irenopsis pteridicola are strictly dependent on environmental factors. The fungus thrives in high-humidity conditions (above 80% RH) and where water films persist on the leaf surface for extended periods. Spores are easily disseminated by water splashing during irrigation, contact with contaminated tools, or via air currents.

Management of this disease requires an integrated approach starting with strict sanitation. Removing and destroying affected fronds is essential to reduce the inoculum load. Maintaining optimal airflow and reducing ambient humidity are critical for long-term control. In severe cases, the application of protective or systemic fungicides should be implemented to inhibit further mycelial growth and spore production.
