Isaria infection refers to a fungal disease in plants caused by specific species within the Isaria genus. While some strains of these fungi are widely recognized as entomopathogens used in biological control programs, under certain conditions, they can act as opportunistic pathogens that invade plant tissues, particularly when the host plant is stressed or weakened.
This infection typically affects various crops, including greenhouse vegetables, ornamental plants, and berry bushes. Greenhouse environments provide a specific microclimate that, if not strictly managed, allows these fungi to transition from beneficial biocontrol agents to plant pathogens, attacking the leaves, stems, and fruits of vulnerable specimens.
The primary symptoms of Isaria infection include the appearance of localized necrotic spots on foliage and stems, which rapidly become covered by a dense, velvety mycelial growth. This growth is often white or pale pink in color. As the infection progresses, the affected plant tissues soften, turn necrotic, and eventually die, leading to significant foliage loss and fruit decay.
High relative humidity levels and stagnant air are the main catalysts for the development and spread of this disease. Spores are easily disseminated by water splashes during irrigation, contaminated gardening tools, or air currents within the facility. Dense planting patterns further exacerbate the situation by preventing proper aeration of the canopy, allowing the fungus to establish itself quickly.
The economic impact of Isaria infection includes reduced crop yield, lower product quality, and the potential for total loss of the harvest if not addressed early. Effective control strategies involve maintaining optimal greenhouse environmental conditions, ensuring proper sanitation, removing infested plant debris, and applying systemic or contact fungicides when the initial signs of fungal colonization appear.
