Issatchenkia is a genus of yeast fungi categorized as plant pathogens that primarily cause the deterioration of fruits, berries, and various agricultural crops. As members of the Ascomycota phylum, these microorganisms are notorious for triggering fermentation processes, which lead to significant economic losses during the harvest and storage stages.
These yeasts typically infect a wide range of fruit-bearing plants, including apples, pears, peaches, and grapes. The infection process is highly opportunistic, meaning the fungi infiltrate plant tissues through mechanical wounds, cracks in the skin, or punctures caused by insects, accessing the nutrient-rich interior of the fruit.
Symptoms of an Issatchenkia infection include softening of the fruit flesh, a distinct sour or fermented odor, and the potential development of a visible, slimy yeast film on the surface. Affected tissues rapidly lose their structural integrity, leading to tissue collapse and advanced decay, often attracting secondary bacterial infections.
The development and spread of these yeast pathogens are favored by warm, humid environmental conditions. Insects, particularly fruit flies (Drosophila), serve as primary vectors, carrying fungal cells from contaminated debris to healthy fruit. This cycle of transmission is especially prevalent in orchards during late summer and early autumn when fruit sugar levels are highest.
Effective prevention and control require an integrated management approach:
- rigorous sanitation of storage facilities and harvesting equipment;
- proactive control of insect pests that damage fruit skin;
- careful handling of produce to prevent bruising and skin breakage;
- maintenance of cool chain logistics to slow microbial metabolic activity.
