Kinetoplastids (Kinetoplastea) are a group of single-celled flagellated eukaryotes that include several pathogenic species capable of infecting plants. Unlike fungal or bacterial pathogens, these organisms primarily reside within the plant's vascular system, specifically in the phloem and laticifers, making them elusive and challenging to eradicate.

The primary agents responsible for plant diseases within this group are species belonging to the genus Phytomonas. The infection is categorized as a systemic vascular disease, where the pathogen spreads throughout the host, physically obstructing sap flow and disrupting metabolic processes, eventually leading to the total decline of the host plant.

These pathogens predominantly affect various tropical and subtropical crops, including coffee, oil palms, coconut palms, and certain solanaceous vegetables. In plantation environments, the rapid spread of the pathogen can result in significant yield losses and necessitates drastic eradication measures to prevent regional outbreaks.

Symptoms often manifest as vascular necrosis, leaf yellowing, distorted fruit development, and the premature shedding of blossoms or fruits. As the disease progresses, the plant exhibits signs of severe systemic distress, often accompanied by the proliferation of callus tissue within the sieve tubes as a defense response to the parasite.

The development and transmission of the disease are heavily dependent on insect vectors, typically true bugs (Hemiptera), which transmit the pathogen while feeding on plant sap. Integrated pest management, focusing on the rigorous control of vector populations and the use of certified pathogen-free planting materials, remains the most effective strategy for preventing the spread of Kinetoplastids in the field.
