Description
Lacellina blight is a fungal disease caused by various species of the Lacellina genus. These fungi are classified as pathogens that often appear on crops under stress, colonizing plant tissues and deriving nutrients from them. While often considered opportunistic, under high humidity conditions, they can cause significant damage to plant health.
The disease primarily targets cereal crops, such as wheat, barley, and rye. It affects various parts of the plant, including leaves, leaf sheaths, and sometimes stalks. The fungi can persist on crop debris, making it a recurring issue in fields where monoculture is practiced without proper sanitization.
The symptoms are characterized by the appearance of dark, velvety tufts or spots on the leaf surface. These spots are composed of dense clusters of conidiophores and spores. As the infection progresses, the surrounding plant tissue may develop chlorotic patterns, eventually leading to necrosis and premature senescence of the foliage.
The development and spread of the pathogen are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity and warm temperatures are critical for the spore germination and colonization processes. In fields with poor ventilation, dense canopy cover, or during periods of prolonged rainfall, the infection can spread rapidly across a field via wind-borne conidia.
The economic impact of Lacellina blight is linked to the reduction in the total photosynthetic area of the plant, leading to stunted growth and reduced grain filling. Effective protection strategies involve a combination of chemical and cultural practices. These include the use of resistant crop varieties, proper crop rotation schedules, mechanical removal or incorporation of infected stubble into the soil, and the timely application of systemic fungicides to prevent the spread of the fungal colonies.
