Bacterial lactobacillosis, caused by Lactobacillus desidiosus, is a significant pathology affecting various botanical species. This pathogen functions as a destructive agent that breaks down plant tissues through enzymatic activity, specifically targeting cell walls and intracellular components. The result is a rapid deterioration of the affected plant's structural integrity and physiological balance.

The host range for Lactobacillus desidiosus includes several economically important vegetable crops, such as tomatoes, peppers, and various brassica species. The bacteria often exploit wounds caused by pruning, insects, or environmental stress, such as heavy rain or hail. Once entry is gained into the vascular or parenchymal tissue, the pathogen initiates a colonization process that consumes nutrients and energy resources of the host.

Clinical signs of the disease are characterized by water-soaked lesions that quickly progress into soft, slimy rot. As the bacteria metabolize the plant material, they produce acidic byproducts, which often results in a sour odor emanating from the infected tissue. Contaminated soil, infected irrigation water, and pests acting as vectors are the primary drivers for the widespread dispersal of this bacterial agent.
