Lagynion is a genus of oomycete-like organisms that function as plant pathogens. These organisms typically inhabit aquatic environments or saturated soils, where they target the roots and stems of vulnerable plant species. Unlike true fungi, these pathogens produce motile zoospores, allowing them to spread rapidly through irrigation systems and standing water in fields or greenhouses.

The disease primarily affects hydrophytes and various horticultural crops grown under conditions of excessive moisture. It is particularly dangerous in hydroponic setups and nurseries where constant irrigation is applied. The pathogen attacks the root cortex, causing physiological dysfunction and depriving the plant of essential water and nutrient uptake, which leads to sudden wilt.

Symptoms of Lagynion infection include the softening and browning of root tissues, which often progresses to the stem base. Early indicators include a general loss of plant vigor, chlorosis of the lower leaves, and a noticeable decay at the soil line. If left unmanaged, the root system becomes necrotic, and the entire plant will collapse within a short period.

Development is highly dependent on humidity and soil saturation. Water stagnation acts as a vector for the rapid migration of zoospores from infected to healthy plants. Temperatures in the range of 15–25°C are often optimal for the pathogen’s metabolism and reproduction, making summer greenhouse conditions particularly risky for disease spread.

Preventive measures are critical for managing this pathogen. Improving soil structure through effective drainage is the most efficient way to reduce the risk of infection. Growers should also focus on using clean, treated irrigation water and maintaining high sanitation standards for all tools and surfaces. In cases of active outbreak, fungicides targeting oomycetes are necessary to halt the progression of the rot.
