Lasiobolus is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascobolaceae family. In agricultural science, while primarily recognized as coprophilous organisms, these fungi can manifest as opportunistic pathogens on crops. Their presence is often indicative of poor soil management, high organic residue levels, or excessive moisture conditions that create a habitat suitable for fungal colonization.

The pathogen is an ascomycete that produces small, bristly apothecia as part of its reproductive cycle. These structures are critical for the identification of the fungus. Because the fungus thrives in nutrient-rich environments, it can easily transition from decomposing organic matter to living plant tissues, especially when plants are stressed or damaged.

Commonly affected crops include various greenhouse vegetables, leafy greens, and forage crops. Symptoms usually appear on the parts of the plant near the soil surface. Typical signs include soft rot, lesions, and the appearance of small, hair-covered reproductive structures on the surface of stems or leaves, which can lead to significant aesthetic and qualitative loss of the harvest.

Development and spread are facilitated by warm temperatures and high humidity. Spores are easily dispersed through irrigation water, wind, and agricultural machinery. In greenhouse environments, the lack of proper ventilation significantly accelerates the spread of Lasiobolus, turning minor occurrences into localized outbreaks that require immediate intervention.

Management strategies focus on environmental control and sanitation:

  • Proper sanitation and removal of all crop debris from fields and greenhouses.
  • Managing irrigation systems to prevent soil waterlogging and high ambient humidity.
  • Improving air circulation to dry out the soil surface and foliage.
