Leaf smut, caused by the fungus Eballistra oryzae, is a specialized fungal disease that primarily affects crops such as rice, as well as sunflowers and Jerusalem artichokes. Unlike many other smut fungi that focus on reproductive organs, this pathogen specifically targets the leaf tissue, leading to distinct physiological disruption in the host plants.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of light-colored spots or pustules on the foliage, which contain masses of fungal spores. As the infection progresses, these spots often merge, leading to chlorosis, tissue desiccation, and premature leaf drop.
