Diseases and host crops. This fungus is the causative agent of white leaf spot disease. It affects a wide range of ornamental and wild plants including Asters, Dahlias, and various Compositae. The disease manifests as distinct, often pale or white spots on the leaves, which can lead to localized tissue necrosis.

Biology and life cycle. The pathogen survives as chlamydospores in soil or infested plant debris. Under favorable conditions, these spores germinate and release sporidia, which penetrate the host leaves through stomata. Inside the leaf tissue, the mycelium spreads, ultimately producing new spores that facilitate secondary infections during the growing season.

Conditions for development and economic impact. High humidity and moderate temperatures are the primary environmental drivers for the rapid spread of Entyloma compositarum. The pathogen reduces the photosynthetic capability of the host by damaging leaf tissue, which results in stunted growth and diminished flowering, causing significant losses in ornamental plant quality.

Protection and control measures. Management strategies should focus on reducing the inoculum density in the field:

  • Implementing strict sanitation by removing and disposing of diseased plant debris after the season.
  • Improving air circulation in planting areas to reduce leaf wetness.
  • Applying preventive or curative systemic fungicides during periods of high humidity.
  • Rotating crops to prevent the buildup of soil-borne spores.
