Leocarpus (most commonly Leocarpus fragilis) is a unique organism belonging to the group of myxomycetes, also known as slime molds. While not a classical plant pathogen that causes infectious rot, it is an organism that colonizes aerial parts of plants and crop residues. In agricultural terms, it acts as a saprophyte or occasional parasite that physically interferes with plant processes by covering the surface of leaves and stems.

The causative agent is the plasmodium, a mobile multinucleate mass that develops into sporangia under favorable environmental conditions. This type of organism combines biological traits of both fungi and amoeboid protists. During its life cycle, Leocarpus moves across surfaces before settling down to form characteristic sporulating structures, which often resemble small, colorful droplets or clusters.

This slime mold affects a wide range of crops, including cereals, forage grasses, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It poses a particular risk in high-humidity environments, shaded fields, and areas with dense canopy cover. Leocarpus is frequently observed on low-lying vegetation close to the soil surface or in fields with poor drainage and excessive moisture.

The primary symptoms include the appearance of small, round, or elongated structures in shades of yellow, brown, or orange on plant organs. Although the plant does not necessarily die from toxins, the presence of these crust-like sporangia blocks the stomata, prevents light absorption, and disrupts transpiration, leading to a decline in plant vigor and potential loss of biomass.

To prevent the spread of Leocarpus, it is essential to follow agronomic practices aimed at reducing microclimate humidity. Key measures include regular weeding, improving air circulation through proper planting spacing, and ensuring effective soil drainage. Chemical control specifically targeting slime molds is rarely documented; therefore, preventive applications of broad-spectrum fungicides during periods of high humidity are recommended to reduce surface colonization.
