While it is not a true plant parasite, it frequently colonizes the aerial parts of plants, including stems and leaves, during its reproductive phase. For farmers and gardeners, it is often viewed as a nuisance because it disrupts the physiological processes of the affected crops.
The biological cycle of this organism involves a plasmodium stage, where it moves across surfaces consuming organic matter and microorganisms. When the conditions become suitable for reproduction, the plasmodium converts into clusters of sporangia. These structures physically cover the surface of the plant, hindering the critical processes of gas exchange and photosynthesis in the affected tissues.
A variety of crops can be affected, ranging from small ornamental plants to vegetables and turf grasses. The presence of Leocarpus fragilis is often most visible after rainy periods or in environments with constant high humidity. Plants with dense foliage or those kept in poorly ventilated greenhouse conditions are particularly susceptible to this type of colonization.
The development of this myxomycete is strictly dependent on moisture. High atmospheric humidity and stagnant water around the plant base are the primary drivers for its rapid expansion. The spores of the organism are easily dispersed by wind, water splashes, and physical contact, allowing it to move quickly across a field or garden bed once a colony is established.
To manage and prevent the spread of this organism, focus on environmental modification rather than harsh chemical control. Essential steps include:
- Improving drainage to reduce surface moisture.
- Ensuring proper spacing between plants to maximize airflow.
- Removing dead plant debris from the soil surface to minimize food sources.
- Pruning lower leaves to increase the distance between foliage and the damp soil surface.
