Leotiomycetes are a diverse class of Ascomycete fungi that contain numerous significant plant pathogens. This group is responsible for a wide array of agricultural diseases, including white mold, powdery mildew, and various forms of stem and fruit rot that can cause substantial economic losses globally.

The most economically damaging members of this class belong to the genus Sclerotinia. These fungi are notorious for their broad host range, infecting a vast spectrum of crops such as sunflower, rapeseed, soybean, and various vegetables. Their ability to produce sclerotia allows them to persist in the soil for several years.

The characteristic symptoms of these infections include water-soaked lesions that quickly develop into soft decay. A dense, white, cotton-like mycelium often covers the infected tissue. Eventually, the fungus produces hard, dark sclerotia, which serve as long-term survival structures and sources for new cycles of infection.

Development and spread are largely driven by high humidity, cool-to-moderate temperatures, and poor air circulation. Under these conditions, the pathogen produces spores that are easily disseminated by wind or splashing rain, enabling the disease to spread rapidly throughout a field or across neighboring farms.

Management of Leotiomycetes requires a multi-faceted approach. Key practices include:

  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to break the pathogen lifecycle.
  • Using deep tillage to bury infected plant residues.
  • Applying preventive fungicides during susceptible growth stages like flowering.
  • Maintaining optimal plant density to ensure adequate airflow.
