Lepiota rufipes is a species of mushroom belonging to the Agaricaceae family, which in an agronomical context acts as a pathogen or saprophyte capable of attacking the root systems of weakened plants. Although it is primarily a soil saprotroph, in greenhouse conditions and intensive farming systems, it may exhibit parasitic behavior by invading plant tissues in the root collar zone.

The disease is caused by a basidiomycete fungus that thrives in conditions of high humidity and the presence of organic matter or undecomposed plant debris in the soil. The pathogen gains entry to the plant through micro-wounds or damaged root systems, gradually colonizing the vascular tissues and inducing necrosis.

Crops affected include ornamental plants, greenhouse vegetables, and seedlings grown in substrates high in peat or organic content. Young seedlings in their active growth phase are particularly vulnerable, as their delicate tissues are easily susceptible to the enzymatic breakdown caused by the fungus.

Symptoms of infection include the appearance of whitish or pinkish mycelium on the soil surface around the stem, followed by yellowing of the leaves, wilting, and decay of the root collar. In severe cases, small fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge in the root zone, serving as a clear indicator of an advanced infection stage.
