Leptophryidae are a group of amoeboid protists recognized in soil microbiology as potential agents affecting plant root systems. While often found in natural ecosystems, under specific agricultural conditions, they can become detrimental to plant health by colonizing the rhizosphere and damaging root tissues.
These organisms primarily target crops with sensitive root systems, including various greenhouse vegetables and high-value horticultural plants. By grazing on rhizobacteria and damaging the epithelial layer of root hairs, they indirectly compromise the plant’s ability to intake water and essential soil nutrients.
