The disease is caused by the fungus Leptosphaerulina argentinensis, an ascomycete pathogen known to induce necrotic symptoms on various plant species. This organism specifically targets leaf tissues, causing localized cell death that eventually leads to foliage wilting and overall plant decline if the infection remains untreated.
The host range for this pathogen primarily includes legumes, particularly alfalfa and clover, though it can also affect various grass species. It is considered a significant pathogen in agricultural regions with high humidity, where the environmental conditions facilitate the transition from the latent phase of the fungus to active colonization of the plant tissues.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, irregular necrotic spots that may eventually coalesce, causing large dead areas on the leaves.
