Description
Leucogyrophana is a genus of basidiomycete fungi known for causing severe brown rot in timber. In an agricultural context, this fungus is considered a destructive agent that targets wood-based infrastructure, such as greenhouse frames, vineyard trellises, storage crates, and foundation beams. By degrading cellulose, it compromises the structural integrity of wood, leading to significant economic losses.
The host range of Leucogyrophana includes both coniferous and deciduous woods. It is frequently found in environments where wood remains moist for extended periods, such as soil-contact posts or poorly ventilated barns and greenhouses. Because it thrives on moist organic substrates, it is a persistent problem for agricultural facilities that lack adequate climate control.
Symptoms of an infestation are characterized by a darkening of the wood, which takes on a deep brown, crumbly appearance. As the decay progresses, the wood tends to shrink and crack into characteristic cuboidal pieces. Careful inspection often reveals the presence of thin, yellow to tan fungal mycelial mats or cord-like structures on the surface of the affected wood.
The development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on moisture levels (typically exceeding 20% wood moisture content) and favorable temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Poor air circulation and high humidity are the primary drivers of growth. Once established, the spores can easily spread through air currents to other vulnerable wooden surfaces, especially those with pre-existing damage.
The impact of this fungus on agricultural operations can be severe, leading to the collapse of supporting structures or the decay of storage equipment. Effective management requires a proactive approach to prevent infection and stop the decay process:
- Apply high-quality wood preservatives and fungicides to all wooden structural elements.
- Ensure adequate ventilation and dry conditions within greenhouses and storage facilities.
- Use physical barriers to prevent wood from coming into direct contact with soil or moisture-heavy concrete.
- Promptly remove and replace any timber that shows signs of brown rot to prevent the spread of spores to healthy structures.
