Description
Licea operculata is a species of myxomycete (slime mold) that is occasionally encountered in forest pathology and horticulture. While these organisms are biologically distinct from true fungi, they can colonize the bark of trees, particularly those that are already stressed, dormant, or experiencing tissue death due to environmental or biotic factors.
The organism primarily targets the bark and cambium layers of woody plants. It thrives in environments where there is accumulated organic debris or areas of decaying bark, effectively utilizing these spaces for its vegetative plasmodial stage before progressing to form small, characteristic reproductive structures known as sporangia.
Symptoms of an infestation are characterized by the appearance of microscopic, operculate (lidded) sporangia on the surface of the bark. These appear as small, brownish, or dark spots. In more advanced cases, the area around the colonization site may show signs of moist decay or localized tissue necrosis, which can provide entry points for secondary, more aggressive wood-decaying fungi.
Development is highly contingent upon moisture levels. High humidity, heavy shade, and persistent moisture on the surface of the bark are the primary environmental drivers for Licea operculata proliferation. These conditions allow the spores to germinate and the plasmodium to migrate across the bark surface to consume available organic matter.
Management of this organism focuses on sanitation and improving plant vigor. Recommendations for control include:
- Implementing proper sanitation by removing dead or dying plant matter from the vicinity.
- Pruning to increase airflow and sunlight penetration into the tree canopy.
- Applying appropriate disinfectants or copper-based sprays to trunk wounds.
- Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization to minimize bark sensitivity.
