Description

Lightning damage is a severe non-infectious physiological disorder caused by a direct electrical discharge during thunderstorms. This phenomenon results in localized destruction of plant tissue, often creating characteristic circular or elliptical patterns in fields where crops have been instantaneously affected by the high voltage of the lightning strike.

Soybean fields are particularly susceptible to this damage, although it can occur in corn, wheat, and other broad-acre crops. The visual pattern is typically very distinct: a central area where plants are completely scorched or killed, surrounded by a transition zone of wilting and chlorotic plants that gradually return to healthy growth as you move further from the strike point.

Clinical symptoms include sudden wilting, stem collapse, and darkening of the internal tissues. In soybeans, the pith of the stem may appear discolored, collapsed, or shredded, indicating a total breakdown of the plant's vascular system. The leaves lose their turgor immediately and may dry out while remaining attached to the stems within the affected circular area.

The development of these symptoms is immediate and correlates directly with the timing of a lightning strike in the vicinity. While there is no pathogen involved, the physiological stress caused by the surge can make the surviving plants on the perimeter of the strike zone highly vulnerable to opportunistic pests and secondary fungal pathogens, such as charcoal rot or various wilts.

Management of lightning damage is essentially limited to accurate identification to avoid confusion with pest or pathogen infestations.

  • Confirm the circular geometry of the affected patch.
  • Check for scorched stems and internal tissue degradation.
  • Monitor the perimeter for signs of secondary disease outbreaks.
  • Document the event as a non-pathogenic, climate-related loss.
