Lophiostomataceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi that primarily exist as saprotrophs but can behave as opportunistic pathogens. These fungi are known to colonize the stems, branches, and woody tissues of various agricultural and ornamental plants, often exploiting weakened tissue to initiate localized infections.
The primary symptom of infection involves the appearance of fruiting bodies known as perithecia. These structures are typically dark, carbonaceous, and exhibit a distinct compressed or slit-like opening (ostiole). They usually emerge through the epidermis of the affected plant tissue, causing visible discoloration, necrosis, and eventual tissue degradation or dieback of the stems.
The development of these fungi is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spore dispersal is facilitated by wind and splashing rainwater, which transport the inoculum to susceptible host tissues. Plants that have been weakened by environmental stressors, such as frost injury, drought, or prior pest damage, are significantly more susceptible to colonization.
