Lophodermium leaf spot, caused by the fungal pathogen Lophodermium schweinitzii, is a common and damaging disease affecting various Rhododendron species, including azaleas. As a fungal infection, it primarily targets the foliage, causing significant defoliation and weakening the host plant's overall vitality if left untreated.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants within the Rhododendron genus, including both deciduous and evergreen azaleas. The fungus infects the leaves, disrupting photosynthesis and reducing the ornamental value of the plant. If the infestation is severe, it can result in stunted growth and a reduced ability for the plant to survive cold winters or other environmental stressors.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, brown or dark-colored spots that develop on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots enlarge and may merge.
