Macrosporiosis is a fungal plant disease caused by pathogens of the genus Macrosporium. It is categorized among the dry spot diseases and poses a significant threat to various agricultural crops, potentially causing widespread damage if left unmanaged during the growing season.

This disease primarily impacts plants within the Solanaceae family, including tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and peppers. While its effects are most commonly observed on foliage, the pathogen can also infect stems and fruits, significantly undermining the overall health and yield potential of the plant.

The hallmark of macrosporiosis is the development of dark, circular, or irregular spots on leaves, often characterized by concentric rings. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, leading to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and eventual premature defoliation, which severely compromises the plant's metabolic capacity.

High humidity and moderate temperatures between 18°C and 25°C create an ideal environment for the proliferation of fungal spores. The pathogen survives overwinter in infected plant debris and soil, spreading rapidly via wind, splashing rain, or contaminated tools throughout the field or greenhouse environment.

The economic impact of macrosporiosis is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthesis, stunted growth, and diminished fruit quality. If the infection reaches the fruit, it results in sunken, necrotic lesions that make the produce unmarketable and susceptible to secondary rot during post-harvest storage.
