Malvastrum leaf curl is a serious viral disease caused by the Malvastrum leaf curl virus. This pathogen belongs to the Geminiviridae family, specifically the Begomovirus genus. The virus contains single-stranded DNA and causes systemic infection in susceptible hosts by altering hormonal balances and disrupting normal plant developmental pathways.

Key crops susceptible to this disease include members of the Malvaceae family, such as cotton, mallow, and hibiscus. In addition to commercial crops, the virus can persist in various weed species, which act as alternative hosts and reservoirs, ensuring the survival of the pathogen between cropping seasons.

Symptoms of the infection typically include severe distortion of leaves, downward curling of leaf margins, vein thickening, and yellowing or mosaic patterns.
