Brown spot of birch is a common fungal disease caused by the pathogen Marssonina betulae. This disease primarily affects foliage of various birch species (genus Betula), resulting in significant aesthetic damage and overall physiological weakening of the tree. As a leaf spot disease, it is frequently encountered in both managed landscapes and natural forest stands during the warmer months.
The primary symptoms involve the appearance of brown, dark-brown, or sometimes greyish spots on the leaves. These spots can be irregular or circular in shape and often expand over time, potentially merging to cover large parts of the leaf surface. In the center of the necrotic tissue, minute fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge, which produce spores that facilitate the rapid spread of the disease throughout the tree's canopy.
The development of this fungal pathogen is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. It spreads most effectively during wet summer months, as rain splashes help transport fungal spores to new leaves. The pathogen typically overwinters in infected leaf litter that remains on the ground. This reservoir of inoculum is critical, as it serves as the primary source of infection for the upcoming growing season.
The impact of brown spot on tree health is significant due to the reduction of the leaf area available for photosynthesis. This premature loss of foliage depletes the tree's energy reserves before winter.
