Massospora is a genus of specialized entomopathogenic fungi that specifically target cicadas. Unlike typical plant pathogens, these fungi function as biological regulators, disrupting the life cycles of insect populations that would otherwise feed on foliage and xylem of various trees and ornamental plants.
The primary pathogen, Massospora cicadina, works by infecting the host during the nymph stage. Once the adult cicada emerges from the soil, the fungus begins to colonize the abdominal segments. It replaces the insect's internal organs with a dense, friable mass of fungal spores, effectively turning the cicada into a mobile transmitter of infection.
Symptoms are easily identifiable in the field. The most striking sign is the loss of the abdominal tip, replaced by a yellowish, chalky plug of fungal spores. In addition, infected cicadas often engage in hyperactive behavior or mimic mating calls of the opposite sex, which facilitates the horizontal transmission of the fungus to healthy individuals.
Environmental conditions, particularly soil moisture and the synchronized emergence of host populations, are critical for the spread of the disease. The fungal spores remain dormant in the soil for years, waiting for the next cohort of nymphs. Once activated by favorable moisture levels, they undergo rapid development, ensuring a high rate of infection within the host colony.
The economic impact of Massospora is primarily positive, as it serves as a natural control mechanism for cicada infestations. While there are no direct chemical protection measures or fungicides intended to control this organism, its presence significantly reduces the potential damage caused by cicadas to host plants, making it a subject of interest in integrated pest management research.
