Poplar rust

Melampsora populnea

Description

The causal agent of this disease is the heteroecious rust fungus Melampsora populnea. As a biotrophic pathogen, it requires two distinct hosts to complete its life cycle: conifers, typically larch (Larix), which serve as the alternate host for aeciospore production, and poplars (Populus), where the uredinial and telial stages occur.

The primary hosts affected by this fungus are various species of Populus, including poplar and aspen. The disease is particularly problematic in commercial nurseries and urban landscapes, where it can cause significant aesthetic and growth impacts. In dense plantations, the pathogen can spread rapidly if environmental conditions are favorable.

Symptoms initially appear in mid-summer as small, bright yellow or orange pustules on the underside of leaves. As the infection progresses, these pustules can cover the entire leaf surface. By late autumn, the pustules develop into dark brown or black crusts. Severe infections often lead to premature yellowing and heavy leaf drop before the growing season ends.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors. Prolonged periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. Because the spores are wind-dispersed, the disease can easily travel across wide areas, leading to localized epidemics.

The damage caused by Melampsora populnea is significant as it disrupts the tree's photosynthetic capacity. This leads to stunted growth, reduced wood production, and increased susceptibility to winter damage and secondary stressors. In young trees, repeated annual infections can eventually lead to mortality due to accumulated physiological stress.

  • Remove and destroy fallen leaves to reduce the primary inoculum for the next season.
  • Select resistant poplar cultivars during the initial planning of plantations.
  • Maintain spatial separation between poplar and larch plantations to break the cycle.
  • Apply fungicide sprays in nursery settings if meteorological conditions favor rapid outbreaks.
