Meristacrum (lat. Meristacrum) is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Entomophthorales. While these fungi are primarily known for their entomopathogenic nature, acting as natural regulators of insect populations, they are of significant interest in agronomy due to their complex interactions with plant tissues and the potential to cause disease under specific environmental stressors.
The causal agent is a microscopic fungus characterized by a septate mycelium and complex spore production. The disease typically follows a parasitic infection pathway, where fungal spores land on susceptible host surfaces, penetrate the epidermis, and begin to colonize the interior tissues, extracting nutrients and causing localized damage to the plant.
Various agricultural crops can be affected, particularly those managed in greenhouse environments or high-density field systems. Common symptoms include chlorotic spotting, necrotizing tissue lesions, stunting of growth, and occasionally, the appearance of a thin fungal layer on the surface of leaves or stems during periods of high humidity.
The development and dispersal of the fungus are strictly linked to climatic conditions. Optimal growth occurs in high-humidity environments, typically exceeding 85% relative humidity, combined with moderate temperatures. Poor aeration, lack of sunlight in dense canopies, and standing water create the perfect storm for rapid disease outbreaks across a field or glasshouse.
The economic impact of this pathogen manifests as reduced yield quality, stunted plant development, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. Effective disease management requires an integrated approach:
- Ensuring proper air circulation and ventilation in greenhouse structures.
- Maintaining optimal irrigation schedules to prevent excessive leaf wetness.
