Meruliopsis is a genus of wood-decay fungi characterized by its ability to cause extensive rot in trees and timber. In agricultural and forestry terms, it is recognized as a serious pathogen and saprophyte that targets the internal structure of trees, leading to structural weakness and potential tree failure.

The disease is caused by the fungal mycelium colonizing the vascular and mechanical tissues of the host. It belongs to the category of wood-rotting diseases, where the fungus secretes complex enzymes to break down lignin and cellulose, fundamentally compromising the tree's internal physical integrity.

Host plants typically include a variety of coniferous and deciduous species. Meruliopsis is particularly hazardous in environments where trees are already stressed by unfavorable weather conditions, poor soil quality, or mechanical damage that provides an easy entry point for the fungus to establish itself.

Symptoms are identified by the development of characteristic fruiting bodies on the bark, which appear as thin, porous, or crust-like structures. Internally, the wood becomes discolored and soft. As the infection progresses, the structural core of the tree loses its strength, often resulting in sudden breakage or windthrow.
