Description

Mexican papita is a severe fungal disease caused primarily by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum. It is classified as a vascular wilt pathogen, which invades the xylem tissues of the host plant, effectively clogging the conductive vessels and impeding the flow of water and essential nutrients to the leaves and fruits.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include cotton and various other malvaceous and leguminous species grown in tropical and subtropical regions. The fungus is soil-borne, capable of surviving as chlamydospores in plant debris or directly in the soil matrix for many years, making it exceptionally difficult to eradicate once established in a field.

The typical symptoms of infection include chlorosis starting from the lower leaves, wilting during the hottest parts of the day, and stunted growth. A distinctive diagnostic sign is the darkening or brown discoloration of the vascular bundles, which can be observed by making a cross-section of the stem near the base of the plant.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of the disease include high soil temperatures and periods of high humidity or excessive irrigation. The pathogen disseminates through contaminated agricultural machinery, wind-blown dust, infected irrigation water, and the movement of untreated seeds between different farming areas.

The pathogenicity of Mexican papita is highly destructive, leading to significant yield losses and potential death of entire crops. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for control, focusing on the use of resistant crop varieties, crop rotation with non-host species, soil solarization, and the application of fungicides during the early stages of plant development.
