Description

The disease is caused by the basidiomycete fungus Microbotryum stellariae, which is classified as an anther smut pathogen. This fungus is a specialized parasite that targets members of the Caryophyllaceae family, specifically focusing on common chickweed (Stellaria media) and related species. It is a systemic pathogen that occupies the host’s reproductive organs.

The primary symptom of infection is the transformation of the host's anthers into masses of dark, powdery teliospores. While the plant appears normal in vegetative stages, the fungus effectively hijacks the flower development process. Once the spores are mature, they replace the pollen, and the flower effectively becomes a mechanism for spore dispersal rather than reproduction.

Infection cycles are largely dependent on environmental factors such as high humidity and optimal temperatures during the flowering season. The pathogen spreads via wind currents, which disperse the spores over considerable distances, or through insect vectors (pollinators) that visit both infected and healthy plants, facilitating the transmission of the fungus.
