Moesziomyces bullatus is a fungal pathogen responsible for millet head smut, a disease that specifically targets the reproductive structures of millet plants. This basidiomycete fungus disrupts the plant's development, replacing healthy seeds with spore-filled sori, which significantly reduces the agricultural output.

The primary host for this pathogen is common millet (Panicum miliaceum). While its host range is relatively narrow, the persistence of the pathogen in the soil and on seed surfaces makes it a challenging issue for growers who cultivate millet in intensive agricultural systems.

Symptoms are most visible during the flowering and grain-filling stages. The pathogen causes the formation of large, bubble-like galls on the panicles. These galls are initially covered by a persistent membrane, which eventually ruptures, releasing a cloud of dark, powdery teliospores into the field environment.

The infection process is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures. Spores can remain dormant in the soil for several years or survive as contaminants on the surface of seeds, facilitating the cycle of re-infection in subsequent growing seasons.
