The causal agent is an ascomycete fungus. This pathogen functions as both a saprophyte and a facultative parasite. The disease it causes is characterized by the formation of surface and internal molds, which not only physically damage the plant tissue but also compromise the safety of the harvested grain due to metabolic production.

The primary crops affected by this fungus include cereals such as rice, maize, and wheat. The infection often starts when spores land on damaged tissues or when the moisture content of the grain exceeds critical levels during storage, allowing the fungus to establish its mycelium rapidly within the substrate.

Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of a distinct red or purple-colored fungal growth on the surface of grains, seeds, or organic matter. This pigmentation is a hallmark sign of the pathogen's activity. As the fungus consumes the nutrients of the host, the texture of the affected tissue softens and becomes discolored.

The development and spread of Monascus purpureus are heavily dependent on warm, humid conditions, specifically temperatures between 25°C and 35°C and high relative humidity. Effective protection strategies focus on environmental control, including rigorous drying of agricultural products to below 14% moisture content, proper aeration of storage facilities, and systematic cleaning of equipment to prevent spore accumulation.
