The primary host for this pathogen is the hawthorn (genus Crataegus). The fungus invades leaves, blossoms, and young developing fruit. By targeting the reproductive organs, Monilinia johnsonii directly impacts the fruit production potential of the tree, causing significant economic and aesthetic damage in ornamental and wild-growing plantings.

Symptoms typically appear in the spring shortly after bloom. Affected leaves and shoots show signs of rapid wilting and necrosis, turning brown or black as if scorched by fire. As the disease progresses, infected fruit mummify and may remain attached to the branches, serving as a reservoir for fungal spores that appear as gray-colored pustules.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Monilinia johnsonii. Prolonged periods of cool, wet weather during the spring promote spore germination and infection. The primary inoculum comes from mummified fruit that overwintered on the tree or in the leaf litter, releasing spores when humidity levels rise.
