Monoblepharis infection is a plant pathology caused by Monoblepharis fungi, which are classified as oomycetes. These microorganisms are distinct for their aquatic life cycle, utilizing flagellated zoospores to move through water and infect susceptible host tissues. They typically act as opportunistic pathogens that thrive in environments where water drainage is poor.

The infection primarily targets the root systems of various crops, especially those grown in hydroponic systems or heavily saturated greenhouse soils. By invading the cortical tissues of the roots, the fungus disrupts the uptake of essential nutrients and moisture, eventually leading to chlorosis, stunted development, and the total collapse of the plant.

Key symptoms include the appearance of a cottony, white or greyish mold on the roots and the base of the stem. As the disease progresses, the affected tissues become mushy and necrotic, emitting an unpleasant odor. Under high magnification, one can observe the characteristic reproductive structures of the fungus that allow it to colonize new areas of the rhizosphere.

The development of this disease is highly dependent on humidity and soil aeration. Monoblepharis proliferates rapidly in stagnant water at temperatures ranging between 15°C and 22°C. Overwatering and the accumulation of decaying organic matter are the primary factors that trigger outbreaks, facilitating the rapid spread of spores throughout the irrigation network.

Effective disease management requires stringent sanitation protocols. This includes the sterilization of growing substrates, regular cleaning of irrigation pipes, and the implementation of proper drainage systems.

  • Maintain soil aeration to prevent anaerobic conditions.
  • Remove and destroy all infected plant material immediately.
  • Apply specific fungicides targeting oomycetes as a chemical control measure.
Constant monitoring of root health is essential to minimize the risk of economic losses.
