Description

Bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) of watermelon, caused by the pathogen Acidovorax citrulli, represents a severe threat to global cucurbit production. This gram-negative bacterium is capable of causing significant yield losses, especially in regions with intensive cultivation practices and favorable climate conditions.

The disease affects a wide range of cucurbits, including watermelons, muskmelons, and squash. Acidovorax citrulli is particularly insidious because it can remain latent in seedlings, showing no immediate symptoms until environmental conditions trigger a sudden and aggressive outbreak during the fruit development stage.

Typical symptoms appear as small, water-soaked, greasy-looking lesions on leaves, often associated with vein-limited angular chlorosis. On fruit, the pathogen causes distinct, water-soaked, sunken lesions that rapidly turn dark brown or black, leading to extensive tissue rot and rendering the fruit commercially valueless.

Epidemics are driven by high relative humidity (above 90%), prolonged leaf wetness, and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 35°C. The pathogen can be introduced through contaminated seed lots, infected transplants, or survival on alternative weed hosts in the environment, making sanitation a critical component of disease management.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Key practices include:

  • Sourcing certified, pathogen-free seeds.
  • Implementing strict greenhouse sanitation protocols.
  • Rotating crops with non-cucurbit hosts for at least 3 years.
  • Utilizing copper-based bactericides for preventative field sprays.

Early detection through molecular diagnostics and visual monitoring remains the best defense. Because there are currently no completely resistant commercial varieties, integrating cultural practices with chemical protection is essential to mitigate the economic impact of this highly contagious bacterial pathogen.
