Mucilago (predominantly Mucilago crustacea) is a specific type of myxomycete — a slime mold that is often mistaken for a fungal plant disease. Unlike true pathogens, this is not a parasitic organism, but a saprotroph that uses the stems and leaves of cultivated plants solely as a substrate for support and sporulation.
The primary causal agent is Mucilago crustacea, which belongs to the class of myxomycetes. Agronomists classify this condition as a surface contamination or "false infection" because the organism does not penetrate plant tissues, does not feed on plant sap, and does not cause decay or cellular necrosis.
This slime mold most often affects low-growing crops, such as strawberries, lawn grasses, various vegetables, and flowers whose stems are close to the soil surface. It is also found on weeds, making it a common occurrence in dense plantings with poor air circulation.
Symptoms of infestation appear as thick, foamy, or loose white, yellowish, or grey formations that resemble construction foam. Over time, this mass hardens and turns into a dense crust covered with spores, which can completely wrap around the plant stem or leaf, obstructing photosynthesis.
The main conditions for the development of Mucilago are high soil and air humidity, prolonged rain, and lack of ventilation. Spores are spread by water droplets and wind, actively developing in areas with excessive organic matter accumulation. The harm to the plant lies in the disruption of gas exchange and the blocking of essential sunlight.
For control and prevention, it is recommended to ensure good aeration of plantings, mulch the soil to prevent splashing onto stems, and promptly remove affected parts. In most cases, it is sufficient to simply wash the slime off with a stream of water or carefully cut away the affected section, as systemic fungicides are largely ineffective against myxomycetes.
