Multiple sprouting disease is a severe phytoplasma-induced condition that affects the vascular health of citrus trees. As a systemic disease, it disrupts the internal transport of nutrients and hormones, leading to significant physiological stress and stunted growth patterns throughout the entire plant.
The primary hosts for this disease are various Citrus species, including economically important crops like sweet oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. The infection is particularly damaging because it compromises the tree's ability to produce high-quality yields and can eventually lead to the decline of the entire orchard if not managed properly.
The most distinctive symptom of this disease is the proliferation of buds, resulting in dense, broom-like clusters of weak and stunted shoots. Key diagnostic signs observed in affected orchards include:
- Extreme shortening of internodes, leading to a crowded appearance.
- Chlorosis and reduced size of leaves (microphylly).
- Deformed branch growth often resembling a "witches' broom."
- Reduced fruit production and poor quality of the remaining fruits.
The transmission of the pathogen is primarily driven by insect vectors, such as leafhoppers and psyllids, which acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected trees and transmit it to healthy ones. Furthermore, the use of contaminated budwood during grafting and budding processes serves as a critical pathway for the spread of the disease between nurseries and plantations.
Management strategies focus on strict sanitation and the prevention of vector spread. It is essential to use certified disease-free planting material and perform regular inspections of the orchard. Any tree displaying symptoms must be promptly removed and destroyed to prevent the pathogen from spreading to healthy neighbors, while insecticide programs should be used to control the vector population.
