Myceliophthora lutea is a pathogenic fungus that poses a significant threat to the commercial cultivation of mushrooms, specifically Agaricus bisporus. Often referred to as "yellow mold," this organism is a notorious competitor that colonizes the casing layer and substrate, drastically reducing mushroom yield and quality.
The fungus acts as an aggressive colonizer, outcompeting the mushroom mycelium for nutrients. By secreting specific enzymes, Myceliophthora lutea degrades the substrate, rendering it unsuitable for the growth of the mushroom crop. In severe infestations, the entire yield can be lost if containment measures are not implemented immediately.
Symptoms of the disease are typically observed as yellow, orange, or rusty patches appearing on the surface of the casing soil. As the pathogen spreads, the casing layer may develop a distinct, unpleasant, or musty odor. The presence of these patches indicates that the fungus has already penetrated the growth media, which often leads to the softening and necrosis of the mushroom mycelium.
Development and spread are facilitated by warm temperatures and high humidity levels often found in mushroom growing houses. Spores of Myceliophthora lutea are easily dispersed by air currents, workers' clothing, or contaminated tools. Improper pasteurization of the compost and poor sanitation practices are the primary factors that allow this pathogen to establish a foothold in the production environment.

- High-quality pasteurization of both the substrate and the casing material to eliminate spores.
- Regular disinfection of all surfaces and structural components within the growing facility.
