Description
Mycoblastus is a genus of crustose lichens that often colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. While they are not technically plant pathogens that feed on the tree’s sap, their presence is often an indicator of stagnant air circulation or reduced vigor in the tree, particularly in older specimens.
Biologically, these organisms exist as a stable symbiosis between fungi and algae. They inhabit the tree surface, extracting moisture and mineral nutrients directly from the air and atmospheric precipitation, rather than exploiting the tree's internal vascular system for sustenance.
This lichen is typically found on the bark of mature fruit trees such as apples, pears, and various ornamental species. It manifests as thin, crust-like patches that adhere firmly to the bark, varying in color and texture depending on the specific environmental conditions of the microclimate.
High humidity, lack of sunlight, and neglected canopy maintenance are the primary drivers of its spread. When trees are densely planted or suffer from poor pruning, the internal humidity remains elevated, allowing spores to settle and colonize the bark surface effectively over several seasons.
The main danger posed by Mycoblastus is the secondary habitat it provides for harmful insects. The dense lichen layer can harbor mites, scale insects, and other pests, which hide beneath the growth. This protection from predators and environmental factors can lead to increased pest pressure and bark deterioration.
Effective management focuses on preventive cultural practices, such as proper pruning to improve airflow within the canopy. In cases of heavy infestation, mechanical removal using a soft brush or specialized scraper during the dormant season, followed by the application of copper-based fungicides, is recommended to sanitize the bark surface.
