Mycocaliciales is an order of fungi within the class Lecanoromycetes. These organisms are primarily recognized for their role as saprotrophs or lichenized fungi growing on dead or decaying wood, yet they can be found on weakened tree tissues where they colonize damaged bark, acting as opportunistic pathogens that compromise tree health.
The pathology of Mycocaliciales involves the utilization of necrotic tissues as a growth medium. While not typically lethal to healthy, vigorous trees, their colonization is a significant signal of physiological stress within the host plant, often accelerating the structural breakdown of the bark and underlying phloem layers.
Common hosts for these fungi include mature forest trees and elderly orchard species such as apple, pear, and various hardwood varieties. Trees that have suffered from winter frost, sunscald, or improper pruning are particularly susceptible to colonization by these organisms, which thrive in compromised wooden environments.
The primary symptom is the emergence of small, pin-like apothecia that appear as dark or black structures protruding from the surface of the bark. Affected areas often exhibit discoloration, localized necrosis, and a general brittleness of the bark, which can eventually lead to the exposure of the sapwood to more aggressive wood-decaying pathogens.
Development and spread are facilitated by high humidity, poor air circulation, and the accumulation of dead plant debris around the base or on the trunk of the tree. The overall impact on plant health is gradual decline, as the fungi contribute to the decay process, making the wood more vulnerable to environmental stress and secondary pests.
