Mycocalicium is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Caliciales, commonly known as stalked fungi. In the field of plant pathology, they are primarily observed as saprotrophs or weak parasites colonizing the bark of various hardwood and softwood tree species.

The causative agent involves several species of this genus, such as Mycocalicium subtile. These fungi target trees that are already suffering from environmental stress or mechanical damage. They thrive on the rough, uneven surfaces of bark where moisture and organic debris accumulate, providing the necessary nutrients for the fungus to establish its vegetative mycelium.

Symptoms are identified by the presence of tiny, pin-like apothecia (fruiting bodies) that emerge from the bark crevices. These structures appear as small black dots on delicate stalks. While the fungus itself is very small, its presence often coincides with darker, decaying spots on the bark and, in some cases, the onset of localized necrosis in the outer layers of the cambium.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Mycocalicium. High atmospheric humidity, poor air circulation, and long-lasting dampness on the trunk surface create a perfect niche for fungal colonization. Spores are efficiently dispersed by wind and can travel significant distances to land on fresh wounds or fissures in the bark of susceptible trees.

The detrimental impact is primarily aesthetic and structural. By decomposing the bark, the fungus creates openings for more aggressive pathogens and wood-boring insects. While a healthy, vigorous tree can often compartmentalize these infections, weakened specimens may experience a decline in vigor, necessitating corrective horticultural practices to restore their health.

Management and prevention strategies include:

  • Regular inspection of trunks and branches for signs of fungal growth.
  • Sanitary pruning of dead or decaying wood to remove infection sources.
  • Maintaining tree vitality through appropriate irrigation and nutrient management.
  • Treating wounds and deep bark cracks with protective fungicides or pruning sealers.
