Mycosphaerella caricae

Description

The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Mycosphaerella caricae (anamorph Cercospora bolleana). This pathogen is responsible for a common foliar disease that specifically targets fig trees (Ficus carica), impacting their photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor during the growing season.

The host range is essentially limited to fig varieties. The disease is most prevalent in warm, humid climates where moisture remains on the foliage for extended periods, providing ideal conditions for the fungus to germinate and penetrate the leaf tissue.

Symptoms initially appear as small, angular, or circular spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these lesions change color from light brown to dark brown or black. In high-humidity conditions, a fine, grayish mold composed of conidia and conidiophores becomes visible on the underside of the leaves.

The development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on environmental factors. Rain splashing and wind-borne dispersal are the primary methods for moving spores from the infected leaf litter, where the fungus overwinters, to the new foliage during the spring and summer months.

The impact of fig leaf spot is significant due to premature defoliation. When trees lose their leaves mid-season, the carbohydrate reserves are depleted, leading to stunted shoot growth, poor fruit development, and decreased tree hardiness, which may negatively influence the yield of subsequent years.

Integrated management is essential for controlling the disease:

  • Strict sanitation by raking and destroying all fallen leaves in late autumn.
  • Pruning the canopy to ensure adequate sunlight and airflow, reducing humidity.
  • Applying copper-based fungicides or other registered agricultural chemicals before the onset of the rainy season.
  • Selecting resistant fig cultivars whenever available in the local market.
