Description

The fungus Mycosphaerella ellipsoidea is a known pathogen responsible for leaf spot disease in various deciduous tree species. As a member of the Ascomycota phylum, it survives the winter season primarily as resting structures within fallen leaf litter. When spring conditions bring warmth and moisture, the pathogen releases spores to infect new foliage, initiating the disease cycle.

Poplar trees (Populus spp.) are the primary hosts for this fungal pathogen. The disease is particularly problematic in commercial nurseries and dense urban plantings where the host plants are in close proximity. While it rarely kills healthy mature trees outright, it can cause severe stress and growth retardation in saplings and young plantations.

Symptoms typically start as small, localized lesions on the leaf surface, which may eventually expand and coalesce. Affected leaf tissues often develop a necrotic appearance, leading to curling, browning, and premature abscission of the foliage. Heavy infections can cause significant canopy loss mid-season, impairing the tree's overall health and physiological processes.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Mycosphaerella ellipsoidea. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense tree stands create the perfect microclimate for spore germination and infection. Wind currents and water splashes are the main vectors for transmitting spores between neighboring trees during the growing season.

The economic and ecological impact of this disease is linked to the reduction of photosynthetic area, which weakens the tree's defense systems against secondary pests and environmental stressors. To manage and prevent the spread of the disease, arborists and foresters recommend the following practices:

  • Removal and destruction of all fallen foliage to eliminate the primary inoculum source.
  • Improving site drainage and ensuring proper spacing between trees to facilitate air circulation and leaf drying.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides during the early leaf-emergence phase if the history of infection exists.
  • Selecting resistant poplar clones and maintaining overall tree vigor through adequate nutrient management.
