Myxogastrea slime molds

Myxogastrea, commonly known as slime molds, are unique organisms often misidentified as fungal pathogens in agricultural and horticultural settings. While they do not strictly parasitize living plant tissues, their presence can be highly detrimental to the health and aesthetics of ornamental plants and garden crops by physically covering and smothering foliage and stems.

These organisms primarily target lawns, ground-cover ornamentals, strawberries, and tender seedlings. They thrive in environments where moisture is retained, such as the lower canopy of dense shrubbery or turfgrass, where they form visible, gelatinous plasmodia that move across the plant surface in search of bacteria and organic debris.

The symptoms of Myxogastrea infestation include the appearance of white, yellow, or grey foamy, slimy patches on leaves and stems. As the organism matures, it transforms into crusty, powdery fruiting bodies that release spores. The primary damage stems from the blockage of stomata, which significantly inhibits gas exchange and photosynthesis, leading to localized plant stress.

The development of slime molds is heavily dependent on specific environmental conditions. Prolonged periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant airflow create an optimal habitat for their proliferation. Spores are easily disseminated via wind, water splashes from irrigation, or contaminated equipment, allowing them to rapidly colonize new areas within a garden or field.

Preventive measures and management strategies focus on creating an environment unsuitable for their growth:

• improving soil drainage and air circulation around plant bases;
• avoiding overwatering and evening irrigation to reduce surface moisture;
• regularly removing plant debris and weeds that retain humidity;
• mowing lawns at the appropriate height to ensure proper light and airflow;
• manually washing off slime deposits with a strong water stream if an infestation occurs.
