Description

Navel infectious mottling is a viral disease closely associated with the Satsuma dwarf virus (SDV). The causative agent belongs to the genus Sadwavirus and acts as a systemic pathogen. By colonizing the phloem tissue of the plant, the virus disrupts nutrient transport, which severely impairs the metabolic functions of the host tree.

The primary host range for this pathogen includes various species of the Citrus genus. While it is particularly known for affecting specific varieties of mandarins and oranges, other citrus types may also serve as reservoirs for the virus. The economic impact is felt through reduced fruit yield and declining tree vigor over several growing seasons.

Diagnostic symptoms include distinctive mottled or mosaic patterns on the leaves, which are often accompanied by abnormal leaf curling or cupping. Infected trees frequently exhibit stunted growth, reduced internode length, and an overall sparse canopy appearance. In advanced stages, the loss of photosynthetic efficiency leads to significant canopy dieback.

The virus is transmitted through infected budding material, contaminated pruning tools, and soil-dwelling nematodes such as Longidorus species. These nematodes act as vectors, moving the virus between root systems in the soil. Environmental conditions, especially soil moisture levels that favor nematode activity, play a critical role in the rapid spread of the disease within an orchard.

Management strategies focus strictly on prevention, as there is no chemical cure for systemic viral infections in trees. Growers should adopt the following practices:

  • Utilize certified virus-free rootstocks and scion wood for all new plantings.
  • Sterilize pruning equipment with appropriate disinfectants between trees.
  • Monitor and control soil nematode populations in high-risk zones.
  • Rogue out and destroy symptomatic trees to prevent further spread.
  • Implement strict quarantine measures for any plant material entering the nursery.
