Description
Satsuma dwarf virus (SDV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Sadwavirus within the Secoviridae family. It is a spherical virus that contains a bipartite positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome. The virus is recognized as a significant pathogen causing stunted growth and leaf distortion in various citrus species.
The primary hosts include the Satsuma mandarin and various other citrus cultivars such as lemons and oranges. Infected plants typically exhibit severe symptoms including malformed leaves, which often appear boat-shaped or narrow. The infected trees suffer from stunted growth, reduced internode length, and a substantial decline in overall fruit yield and quality.
Regarding its biology and cycle, the virus is transmitted through infected grafting materials and contaminated tools. Importantly, it is also vectored in nature by the soil-inhabiting nematode Paratrichodorus porosus. Once the virus enters the host, it moves systemically throughout the plant, colonizing the vascular tissues and accumulating in the leaves, stems, and roots.
The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly soil moisture and temperature, which dictate the activity levels of the nematode vectors. The virus remains active within the infected host throughout its lifespan, making orchards long-term reservoirs for the pathogen if not properly managed.
Control measures primarily focus on prevention and quarantine. Growers should ensure the use of virus-indexed, certified disease-free nursery stock. Additionally, implementing strict sanitation practices for pruning tools and managing nematode populations in the soil are critical to preventing the spread of the virus within and between orchard blocks.
