Description
Net spot, caused by the fungus Leandria momordicae, is a specialized fungal disease primarily affecting cucurbit crops. As an agronomical concern, it represents a significant challenge for growers due to its ability to rapidly impair plant health and reduce marketable yields under optimal environmental conditions.
The primary host for this pathogen is the watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). The disease affects the foliage, stems, and sometimes the fruits, leading to premature senescence of the plant. Because the pathogen targets the photosynthetic apparatus, early and severe infections often result in stunted growth and undersized, low-quality fruit development.
The disease is identified by specific necrotic lesions on the leaves. These lesions develop into a net-like pattern as the necrosis follows the venation of the leaf. Under conditions of high humidity, the centers of these spots may exhibit fungal sporulation. As the disease progresses, leaves curl, desiccate, and eventually detach from the vine.
The development of Leandria momordicae is favored by warm temperatures and high humidity levels. Rainfall and irrigation patterns play a critical role in the dispersal of spores across the field. The pathogen overwintering on infested plant debris ensures that the disease can persist in the soil environment, acting as a constant source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling net spot. Strategies include:
- Crop rotation to break the pathogen's lifecycle.
- Deep plowing to bury infected plant material.
- Application of preventative fungicides during periods of high disease pressure.
- Selection of resistant or tolerant cultivars where available.

Field scouting should be conducted regularly, especially during the growth stages that coincide with favorable weather conditions, ensuring that protective measures can be implemented before widespread infestation occurs.
